What is the purpose of different color graduation gowns?

Im not talking about different colors for men and women, but I was looking at pictures where everyone (both men and women) were wearing blue graduation gowns, but the very first row of people were wearing white ones. Why are these white gowns special? Are these people academically superior in some way? Just wondering.... thanks.
