How to connect my laptop to TV?

I'm trying to connect my HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC to my Panesonic Viera Plasma TV with a VGA cord and have no idea how to get my laptop screen to be displayed on the TV. If anyone could please help that would be great as I'm not having any luck trying anything
